Lateral Pterygoid Muscle Reattachment

Goal: Illustrate the natural attachment of the lateral pterygoid muscle prior to TMJ reconstruction, as well as the subsequent attachment of the muscle to the prosthetic TMJ.

Audience: Dental surgeons

Solution: A selective series of images was created to indicated where the bone is cut during reconstruction, as well as the location and attachment of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) prior to and post reconstruction. In addition, a stylized image illustrated the important role of the LPM in forward and lateral movement of the mandible.
